Batting Gloves: Fit, Materials & Care FAQs

Why do baseball players wear batting gloves?

Batting gloves serve three main purposes:

  1. Grip: They provide a tacky surface that significantly improves your hold on the bat, especially in hot, sweaty weather or cold, dry conditions.
  2. Protection: They prevent painful blisters and calluses from forming during heavy batting cage sessions.
  3. Shock Absorption: They help dampen the stinging vibration in your hands if you hit the ball off the end of the bat or near the handle.

How should batting gloves fit?

A batting glove should fit like a second skin—snug and comfortable, but not so tight that it restricts your hand movement. There should be absolutely no loose material or extra space at the tips of your fingers or bunching in the palm. If the glove is too loose, your hands will slide inside the glove during your swing, defeating the purpose of the grip and causing blisters.

What is the difference between leather and synthetic batting gloves?

  • Leather: Professional players prefer leather (sheepskin, cabretta, or goatskin) because it offers an unmatched, tactile feel on the bat and superior grip. However, leather can stiffen up if it gets wet and dries out.

  • Synthetic: Synthetic gloves feature spandex-like materials combined with artificial leather palms. They are highly breathable, stretch easily to accommodate different hand shapes, and handle moisture (sweat and rain) much better than natural leather.

Do I need to wear a batting glove on both hands?

Batting gloves are almost always sold in pairs, and the vast majority of players wear both to ensure maximum grip and blister protection. However, it is entirely based on personal preference. Some players choose to wear a glove only on their bottom hand (the hand closest to the knob of the bat) to maintain a skin-to-wood feel with their top guiding hand.

How do I clean and maintain my batting gloves?

Batting gloves take on a lot of sweat, pine tar, and infield dirt, so proper care is essential:

  1. Air them out: Never leave sweaty batting gloves crumpled up inside your baseball bag. Smooth them out and let them air dry completely after every game.
  2. Do not machine wash: Throwing leather batting gloves in a washing machine will ruin the material, making them stiff and crusty.
  3. Spot clean: Use a damp cloth to gently wipe away dirt. For authentic leather gloves, you can apply a tiny amount of leather conditioner to keep the palms soft and tacky.
