Baseball Accessories: Grips, Glove Care & Game-Day FAQs
How often should I replace my bat grip tape?
You should re-grip your baseball bat whenever the tape begins to peel, lose its tackiness, or show bare spots where your hands naturally rest. For casual players, a high-quality polymer grip (like Lizard Skins) will easily last a full season. High-level travel or college players who take hundreds of swings a week may need to replace their grip two or three times a season to maintain maximum bat control.
What is a baseball bat weight (donut) used for?
A bat weight—often shaped like a heavy rubber or metal donut—slides down the barrel of the bat. Players use them in the on-deck circle while taking practice swings. The added weight helps stretch and warm up the player's core and arm muscles. When the weight is removed for the actual at-bat, the bat temporarily feels much lighter, increasing the player's bat speed through the zone.
Does eye black actually work for baseball players?
Yes. Eye black (applied as a grease stick or peel-and-stick decals) is wiped directly on the upper cheekbones, right below the eyes. The dark, matte material absorbs incoming light, significantly reducing the harsh glare from the bright sun or intense stadium lights. This helps outfielders and infielders track high fly balls much more easily.
How do I use baseball glove oil?
Glove oil or leather conditioner is used to soften stiff leather during the break-in process and to moisturize dry leather to prevent cracking over time.
-
How to apply: Place a dime-sized drop of oil onto a clean cloth (never pour it directly onto the glove) and rub it evenly into the pocket and hinges.
-
Warning: Do not over-oil your glove! Too much oil will soak into the padding, making the glove heavy and causing the leather to break down and rot prematurely.
What do baseball umpires keep in their pockets?
Behind the plate, umpires carry a few essential tools to manage the game. The most important is the indicator (often called a clicker), a small handheld device used to track the current count (balls, strikes, outs, and innings). They also carry a small, stiff-bristled plate brush to sweep dirt off home plate, and a small pouch containing a specialized lineup card and extra game baseballs.
