Baseballs: Construction, Leagues & Care FAQs

What are the different parts of a baseball?

A standard baseball consists of three main parts

  1. The Pill (Core): The center of the ball, usually made of a cushioned cork or rubber center.

  1. The Windings: Layers of tightly wound wool and polyester yarn that surround the core, giving the ball its shape and resilience.

  1. The Cover: Two figure-eight pieces of white cowhide leather (or synthetic leather) stitched together with exactly 108 red cotton or nylon stitches.

What is the difference between practice and game baseballs?

The main differences lie in the materials and quality control. Game baseballs use top-grade, full-grain leather covers and raised seams for precise pitcher control and aerodynamic flight. They must pass strict league tests for weight and circumference. Practice baseballs often use synthetic leather covers that resist moisture and scuffing better in batting cages, or they are "blem" (blemished) game balls that have slight visual imperfections but still perform well for drills.

How do I choose the right baseball for my league?

Choosing the right baseball depends on the age group and governing body of your league:

  • Youth Leagues (T-Ball & Little League): Look for RIF (Reduced Injury Factor) balls for beginners, or balls carrying the official Little League stamp.

  • High School & College: Baseballs must carry the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) or NOCSAE certification stamps.

  • Adult & Pro: Look for professional-grade flat-seam or raised-seam balls, typically featuring the official MLB (Major League Baseball) specifications.

Why do some baseballs have raised seams vs. flat seams?

  • Raised Seams: Commonly used in youth and high school leagues. The higher stitching gives pitchers a better grip to throw breaking balls and helps fielders secure the ball quickly out of their glove.

  • Flat Seams: Used in college and professional leagues. Because the seams sit flush against the leather, there is less air resistance, allowing the ball to travel further when hit.

How do I clean and maintain my baseballs?

To extend the life of your baseballs, the most important rule is to keep them dry. Water ruins the leather cover, making it heavy and prone to rotting or warping. After practice, wipe off loose dirt with a dry towel. Do not use water or chemical cleaners. Store your baseballs indoors in a cool, dry place rather than leaving them in a damp garage or car trunk. For brand new game balls, umpires often rub them with a specialized fine mud to remove the factory gloss and improve grip!
