Protective Equipment FAQ's

What protective equipment does Team Town Sports carry for hockey?

Our protective equipment section covers helmets (with and without cage or visor combos), shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey gloves, shin pads, hockey pants and girdles, jockstraps and jill guards, neck guards, and mouthguards. We carry a wide selection across youth, junior, intermediate, and senior sizes from Bauer, Battle, Xenith, and other leading brands.

What is a hockey girdle and how is it different from hockey pants?

A hockey girdle is a form-fitting compression shell with integrated padding worn under a separate outer shell or fabric cover. Hockey pants (breezers) are the traditional boxy outer garment with integrated padding covering hips, thighs, tailbone, and kidneys. Girdles suit players who prefer a closer, less bulky feel. Both provide equivalent protection—the choice is personal preference.

What protective gear is mandatory for hockey?

Standard mandatory equipment for most organized hockey in Canada includes a CSA-certified helmet with full cage, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, shin pads, hockey pants or girdle, a cup or jill guard, skates, and a mouthguard. Neck guards are now mandatory in most organized hockey in Canada following updated Hockey Canada regulations.

Are neck guards now required in hockey?

Yes. Following Hockey Canada's updated equipment regulations, neck guards are mandatory for most organized play across age groups in Canada, including for referees. We carry certified neck guards that meet current Hockey Canada standards. Our in-store staff can help point you to compliant options for your specific league.

What hockey helmets does Team Town Sports carry?

Our helmet selection includes models from Bauer, including the Warrior Senior Covert CF100, one of our most visited and highest-converting helmet pages. Helmets are available as shell-only, cage combos, and visor combos across youth, junior, intermediate, and senior sizing. Any helmet used in organized hockey must carry CSA certification.

How do I choose hockey gloves?

Hockey glove sizing is measured from the base of your palm to the tip of your middle finger in inches, with adult sizes typically running from 12 to 15 inches. Key factors include protection level (more padding for physical play), cuff style (gauntlet cuffs for more wrist coverage; shorter cuffs for more mobility), and palm construction (thinner palms improve stick feel).

What shoulder pads does Team Town Sports carry?

Our shoulder pad selection includes models from Bauer and Warrior. The Bauer Youth Supreme Fuse and Bauer Intermediate Supreme Mach lines have been among our strongest-performing shoulder pad products this season.

How do I size shin guards for hockey?

Hockey shin pads sizing is based on the length from the centre of your kneecap to the top of your skate boot, measured in inches. Sizes typically run from 9 inches (small youth) to 18 inches (large senior). The guard should cover the knee fully, extend down the shin, and tuck into the top of the skate boot without bunching or gapping.
