Hockey Skates FAQs

What types of hockey skates does Team Town Sports carry?

Our skate section covers three categories: Hockey Skates for ice hockey players, Goalie Skates specifically engineered for goaltenders, and Recreational Skates for casual skating. All three are available across multiple brands, size ranges, and price points. The hockey skates category is one of our most-visited sections, with strong demand for both performance models and sale options.

What is the difference between Bauer Vapor and Bauer Supreme skates?

Bauer Vapor skates feature a tapered, low-volume fit for a narrow to medium foot with a snug feel throughout the boot — built for quick, agile skating. Bauer Supreme skates offer a wider, higher-volume anatomical fit with more room through the toe box, better suited for wider feet or players who want more space. Both lines run from entry-level to professional-grade. Fit matters more than line name, so trying both in-store is strongly recommended.

How do I find the right hockey skate size?

Hockey skates typically fit 1 to 1.5 sizes smaller than your regular shoe size. Your heel should sit firmly in the heel pocket with minimal lift, and your toes should just lightly touch the toe cap without curling under. A properly fitted skate should feel snug but not painful throughout the instep and ankle. Trying skates on in-store wearing the hockey socks you play in gives the most accurate result.

What does heat moulding or baking mean for hockey skates?

Many mid-range and high-end skates can be heat moulded to custom-conform the boot to your exact foot shape. The boot is placed in a specialized oven that softens the materials, then you lace up and wear them while they cool and set around your foot. This reduces break-in time, improves comfort, and eliminates common pressure points. Many Team Town Sports locations offer skate baking as an in-store service.

What is the difference between Youth, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior skates?

Youth skates (sizes 6J–13J) are for the youngest players. Junior skates (sizes 1–5.5) typically fit players ages 8–12. Intermediate skates (sizes 6–7.5) suit players around ages 12–14. Senior skates (sizes 6–13+) are for adult-level players 14 and up. Because children's feet grow quickly, check sizing annually at the start of each season.

What makes goalie skates different from player skates?

Goalie skates feature a longer, flatter blade profile optimized for lateral slide movements, a reinforced boot with extra protection across the instep and shin to withstand direct puck impacts, and a lower boot profile that allows deep knee flexion during the butterfly. Player skates and goalie skates are not interchangeable. Bauer's KONEKT and KONEKT2 series are our top goalie skate options.

Where can I find hockey skates on sale at Team Town Sports?

Sale and clearance skates are available online and in-store throughout the season. Sale hockey skates — including Bauer Vapor and Supreme models at 20–45% off — are among our most searched pages. Sale skates and clearance skates are updated regularly. Inventory moves quickly once marked down, so check back often.

Do new hockey skates need to be sharpened before first use?

Yes, always. New skates come with a factory finish that is not suitable for skating on ice. Before your first session, have your new skates professionally sharpened. This applies to every category — from youth recreational skates to senior performance models. Team Town Sports stores offer skate sharpening services; ask about this when you pick up your new pair.
