Hockey Stick FAQs
What hockey stick brands and models does Team Town Sports carry?
We carry sticks from Bauer , Warrior , and True . Bauer 's featured lines include the Vapor Flylite, Pulse, and Proto R2 . Warrior's QR5 Pro and Super Novium are standout performers, with the QR5 Pro converting at one of the highest click-through rates in our hockey lineup. True 's HZRDUS series rounds out the elite tier. Entry-level youth hockey sticks from Bauer's Twitch line are also available for younger players.
What stick flex should I choose?
The standard starting point is to match your flex to roughly half your body weight in pounds — a 150 lb player would start with a 75 flex. Players who rely on quick-release wrist shots benefit from a softer flex (55–75), while power forwards and defensemen shooting slapshots often prefer stiffer options (85–110). If you plan to cut your stick to length, factor in that cutting makes the stick effectively stiffer.
What is kick point and how does it affect my shot?
Kick point is the area of the shaft where energy loads and releases during a shot. A low kick point near the blade delivers a quick release ideal for snap shots and wrist shots. A mid kick point offers versatility across most shooting styles. A high kick point near the top hand generates maximum power, favoured by players who rely on slapshots and one-timers.
All of our youth hockey sticks are designed to comply with rules outlined by youth hockey organizations. We even have a wide range of styles and flex ratings to choose from, so you can find the perfect hockey gear for your kid’s next season.
How do I choose the right blade curve pattern?
A toe curve gives a quick snap-release popular with forwards shooting in stride. A mid curve is the most versatile option and suits most positions. A heel curve puts more power behind slapshots and is common for defensemen. An open face angle helps elevate the puck for backhanders; a closed face angle suits low, hard shots and precise passing. If you're new to sticks, a neutral mid curve with a slightly open face is the most forgiving starting point.
What is the difference between one-piece and two-piece hockey sticks?
One-piece sticks are the modern standard — shaft and blade built as a single unit using composite materials like carbon fibre, delivering the best energy transfer, lightest weight, and most consistent feel. Two-piece sticks have a separate shaft and replaceable blade, reducing cost if you break blades frequently, but the connection point adds weight and reduces feedback. All performance sticks in our Bauer , Warrior , and True lineup are one-piece composites.
Are hockey sticks available for Youth, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior players?
Yes. Youth sticks (46–49 inches, 35–40 flex) are for ages roughly 4–8. Junior sticks (50–54 inches, 40–52 flex) suit ages 8–12. Intermediate sticks (54–57 inches, 55–65 flex) are for players ages 12–14. Senior sticks (56–63 inches, 70–110+ flex) are for players 14 and up. The right category is based on the player's height and strength, not just age.
Do you carry both left-handed and right-handed hockey sticks?
Yes. Both left-handed and right-handed sticks are available across all brands and size categories. Handedness refers to the blade orientation — a left-handed stick has the blade curving to the left when you hold the stick with the toe pointing forward. If you're a new player, try both in-store to find what feels natural.
How should I maintain and care for a hockey stick?
Keep the blade taped to protect against moisture and surface abrasion — retaping regularly also maintains puck feel. Avoid leaving sticks in extreme temperatures as thermal stress weakens the shaft. Never use a composite ice hockey stick for driveway or outdoor play; abrasive surfaces destroy the blade far faster than ice use. For street and driveway play, choose a dedicated street hockey stick from our Roller & Street Hockey section .
