Catcher's Equipment: Sizing, Safety & Setup FAQs
What is included in a complete catcher's gear set?
A standard catcher's gear box set includes the three core pieces of armor: a catcher's helmet, a chest protector, and a pair of leg guards. These sets are size-coordinated (Youth, Intermediate, or Adult) and color-matched. Note: A catcher's mitt and an athletic cup are never included in these sets and must be purchased separately.
How do I measure and size catcher's gear?
Proper sizing is critical for both mobility and safety behind the dish.
-
Helmet: Measure the circumference of your head just above the ears, similar to sizing a batting helmet.
-
Chest Protector: Measure from the base of your neck (the clavicle/collarbone dip) straight down to your navel (belly button).
-
Leg Guards: Measure from the absolute center of your kneecap straight down to the bend of your ankle/instep.
What is the NOCSAE standard for catcher's chest protectors?
To protect against commotio cordis (a rare but severe cardiac event caused by a blunt impact to the chest), the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the NCAA mandate that all catcher's chest protectors meet the NOCSAE ND200 standard. Look for the official NOCSAE stamp on the chest plate to ensure the gear is legal for sanctioned league play.
Should I choose a traditional mask or a hockey-style helmet?
-
Hockey-Style Helmets: Mandated by almost all youth and amateur leagues. They offer superior, full-coverage protection for the ears, jaw, and back of the head.
-
Traditional Masks: A two-piece system (a skull cap worn backward with a wire mask strapped over the face). It is easier to quickly throw off when tracking a pop-up, which is why it is still used by some professional and college players, but it leaves the ears and back of the head exposed to backswings.
What are catcher's knee savers?
Knee savers are wedge-shaped foam pads that attach to the back straps of the leg guards, resting between the calf and the thigh. When a catcher drops into a deep crouch, these pads support the player's weight, significantly reducing the strain and pressure on the knee joints and cartilage over a long tournament weekend.
